Real Madrid have taken the first trophy of the Spanish domestic season after a 4-1 victory over Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Carlo Ancelotti’s ran out convincing winners against their arch rivals, with their triumph made possible by Vinícius Júnior’s first-half hat-trick.

The Brazilian scored twice inside the first 10 minutes as Los Blancos made a whirlwind start to the clash and, after Robert Lewandowski had halved the deficit, restored his team’s two-goal advantage from the penalty spot in the run-up to half time.

Messi, Suárez and Benzema in the club, but no Ronaldo

The winger’s hat-trick was the 28th scored in the history of El Clásico and he joins the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Súarez and Karim Benzema in achieving a feat that escaped Cristiano Ronaldo during his spell in Spain. Messi is one of four players to have netted two trebles in the fixture after iconic Madrid figure Santiago Bernabéu, who incredibly did it twice in less than two weeks in 1916, Jamie Lazcano and legendary Hungarian striker Ferenc Puskas, also for Los Blancos.

Incredibly, three different players, including Bernabéu, scored hat-tricks in the same match, a 6-6 draw in the Copa del Rey tie in April 1916.

Before Vinícius, Benzema was the most recent player to score three times in the fixture in a 4-0 cup win for Madrid at Camp Nou in April last year.

How many hat-tricks has Vinícius Júnior scored in his career?

The treble in Riyadh was the second of Vinícius’ career, with his first coming in a 6-0 league thrashing of Levante in May 2022. The Brazilian winger has endured something of an injury-hit season so far but has now scored nine goals and assisted four more in 16 appearances, and appears to have come into form at just the right time as Los Merengues look to challenge on three fronts (LaLiga, Champions League and Copa del Rey).
