The 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup is still at full speed with its action, surprises, good and poor penalty kicks, joyful wins, and tearful upsets.

One of those distressing was Costa Rica’s match vs Spain.

The Central American team did not have an ideal start at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In the opener of Group E, Costa Rica lost 7-0 against Spain at Al Thumama stadium. From a high pressure to the defense Dani Olmo found the back of the net in the 11th minute to open up the scoreboard.

Spain reached a milestone

Olmo scored Spain’s 100th World Cup goal. Marco Asensio, Ferran Torres (2), Gavi, who became the youngest Spaniard to score at the tournament at 18, Carlos Soler, and Alvaro Morata also found the back of the net against the CONCACAF side. It was an embarrassing night for Costa Rica.

Los Ticos had a disappointing night with no shots on goal and they became the second team in World Cup history in terms of most goals conceded in a single match. In first place is El Salvador who lost 10-1 against Hungary in the opening group game during the 1982 FIFA World Cup.

Despite losing by that margin, El Salvador managed to score a goal and exited the campaign with three defeats. They have failed to qualify since then.

Luckily for Costa Rica, they had a better performance against Japan on November 27 in the second matchday of Group E. Keysher Fuller, who changed everything for Costa Rica, scored the only goal of the match to lead his team over Japan 1-0 Sunday at the World Cup.
