WORLD CUP 2022

Who are the Mexican national team coaches with the most wins?

With more than 30 managers since 1929, we look back on those that stayed for a while with El Tri, and how they compare.

It couldn’t have been much closer but, in the end, the Mexico national team has been eliminated from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in the group phase. This means that the players will not have the opportunity to continue the long-running traditional of being knocked out in the round of 16.

How Martino’s Mexico compares to others

Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino has been a fixture of El Tri in recent times, and was disappointed not to have made it out of a group that contained Argentina, Poland and Saudi Arabia, with only the latter team feeling the true capabilities of his side. With that exit, came Martino’s departure too, calling an end to his reign as Mexico boss, and this gives us a chance to reflect on how his record stands up against those of the past.

The first thing that jumps out from the list above is the win ratio. Of those coaches -- remember we’ve excluded those with less than 25 games under their belt -- Tata’s record stands up to scrutiny. A 63.6% win percentage has him joint second, and he has overseen seven more games than Javier Aguirre.

Out in front, though not by much and with fewer matches, is José Manuel de la Torre on 65.9%.

Martino sits fifth on the all-time number of games in charge, behind Ignacio Trelles (106) and Bora Milutinovic (104).
