Who have América signed and sold ahead of Liga MX Clausura 2024?
With their Clausura 2024 opener under a week away, defending champions Club América have much the same squad that won the Apertura 2023 title.
Ahead of the Clausura 2024 tournament, in which Club América will be defending their Liga MX title, Las Águilas have been largely inactive in the transfer market.
América president Emilio Azcárraga has preferred to keep faith in the squad that secured the club’s 14th domestic title in December, by beating Tigres in the final of the Apertura 2023 playoffs.
Who have América signed?
With less than a week to go until América play their opening game of the Clausura 2024, away to Tijuana, the club’s only off-season signing has been left-back Cristian ‘Chicote’ Calderón.
Calderón has been brought in on a free transfer from arch rivals Chivas Guadalajara, who decided to offload the 26-year-old over his inconsistent performances and off-the-field disciplinary issues.
Notably, Calderón was one of three players sidelined by Chivas during the Apertura 2023, after reportedly being caught sneaking women into the team hotel during October’s Liga MX trip to face Toluca.
At América, the defender cap will compete with Luis Fuentes for the left-back berth.
Could América sign anyone else?
As things stand, nobody appears to be in contention to join Calderón at the Estadio Azteca.
Widespread reports in Mexico say that América would like to add a right-back to André Jardine’s squad, but have struggled to find a viable option on the market. Los Azulcremas’ pool of potential targets has been reduced by the fact that the club have filled up all the permitted foreign-player spots in their first-team roster.
Who has left América?
For now, the only confirmed departure has been veteran right-back Miguel Layún, who opted to retire from playing after América’s Apertura 2023 title triumph.
Layún is likely to be followed through the exit door by left-back Salvador Reyes, who is surplus to requirements after Calderón’s arrival and is expected to join Necaxa on loan.
So far, no offers have come in for any of the Mexico City club’s star players, although it’s thought possible that centre-back Sebastián Cáceres could attract bids from European suitors.
After impressing in América’s league win, the 24-year-old Uruguay international is said to be attracting particular interest from clubs in the English Premier League.
When is América’s first Clausura 2024 game?
On matchday one of the Clausura 2024 regular season, América visit Tijuana on Saturday 13 January 2024, with kick-off at the Estadio Caliente scheduled for 10pm ET/7pm PT.
TV viewers in the United States will be able to watch the game on TUDN USA.
