Who is Daniel Siebert, referee for Sporting CP vs Arsenal, Champions League quarterfinal first leg?
Berlin-born official and UEFA elite referee takes charge of a high-stakes night in Lisbon.
UEFA has announced that Daniel Siebert will referee Sporting CP vs Arsenal in the Champions League quarterfinal first leg at Estádio José Alvalade, stepping into one of the four huge games of the week.
Who is Daniel Siebert?
The 41-year-old is a UEFA elite-category official, so can certainly be trusted with high-pressure European nights, although fans will have their own partisan views. His path to this stage has been steady, beginning refereeing in 1998, moving into the 2. Bundesliga in 2009, and reaching the Bundesliga (Germany’s top flight) in 2012. Three years later, he was added to FIFA’s international list.
Siebert has since built a solid record in major tournaments. He handled three matches at UEFA Euro 2020, including the Round of 16 game between Wales and Denmark, and also took charge of the final at the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup.
This season alone, Siebert has whistled in seven Champions League games, handing out a massive 37 yellow cards and two reds. He pointed to the spot once across those.
Off the pitch, Siebert lives in Berlin and works part-time as a teacher within a sports program. On nights like this, though, his focus is simple. Keep the game under control and avoid becoming part of the story.
Who is VAR for Sporting vs Arsenal?
Siebert will obviously not be working alone in Lisbon. Compatriots Jan Seidel and Rafael Foltyn are the assistant referees, with Bastian Dankert on VAR duty and Sören Storks assisting him. Daniel Schlager completes the team as the fourth official.
