At a time when countless names have been paraded around as possible people to lead América into the Apertura 2023 tournament, the figure of Robert Moreno has taken a huge leap forward as the prime candidate.

According to Futbol Picante of ESPN and TUDN, Moreno’s name has gained traction within the boardroom that is eagerly seeking to find Fernando Ortiz’s replacement after he resigned at the end of the semi-finals of the Clausura 2023 after the devastating loss to Chivas.

Moreno is a coach who has experience in different projects across the top divisions of various countries, as well as having been Spain’s national team head coach. His journey as a manager includes teams such as Monaco, where he arrived in December 2019 before leaving in June 2020, after taking the team to a disappointing ninth place in the French League. He took on the role of head coach at Granada from June 2021 to March 2022, where he was sacked due to poor results.

Roberto Moreno has a long list of previous jobs...

His experience as a football manager dates back 20 years when he took charge of local teams such as Blaugrana Collblanc and Marianao Poblet, L’Hospitalet, Unió Esportiva Castelldefels and La Damm.

Later, he joined Luis Enrique Martínez at AS Roma (2011-2012), Celta de Vigo (2013-2014) and FC Barcelona (2014-2017) as an assistant coach. At Barça, he won a Champions League, two Leagues, three Copas del Rey, a Spanish Super Cup and a Club World Cup.

In this period of time he also worked as an assistant to Celta de Vigo head coach Juan Carlos Unzué during the 2017-2018 season. In that year, he became the assistant manager of the Spanish national team, once again accompanying Luis Enrique, before taking full control of the side after personal problems meant Luis Enrique stepped down from the role.

And Club América have an even longer list of potential manager options

Shortly after, Moreno was given the role as the full-time manager in June 2019 and remained in the position until November of that same year, before he was dismissed.

The Club América board have searched high and low for a replacement for Ortiz, with candidates such as Javier Aguirre and Diego Alonso playing down interest.

Other options include Colombian Juan Carlos Osorio as well as Argentines Hernán Crespo, Pablo Pezzolano and even Mauro Camoranesi. If Moreno’s arrival materialises, he would join his compatriot Raúl Herrera, who arrived after Alfredo Tena, and the coach of the women’s team Ángel Villacampa, who has just been crowned winner of the Liga MX Femenil.
