The couple were secretly wed in a civil ceremony in Argentina before exchanging their vows again a few months later in Tuscany.
Diego Simeone was idolized by Atlético Madrid fans back in the day when he was a player and revered now as the team’s coach. But his biggest fans are his family, including his second wife Carla Pereyra, to whom he has been married almost seven years.
Simeone, 56, has been married twice. His first marriage, to Argentinean model Carolina Baldini lasted 20 years and produced three sons: Giovanni, Gianluca and Giuliano. The couple separated in 2008.
From the outside, it might appear that El Cholo is one of those coaches who is “married to the game”, but after several years as a bachelor, he found love again.
Simeone finds love
A chance encounter in a Madrid restaurant sparked a new romance. Carla Pereyra explained how they met in an interview with Carme Chaparro on Mujeres al poder: “It was quite funny. I met him in a restaurant. I went to the ladies room and he followed me...”
Simeone and Carla discovered that they had quite a lot in common - they shared memories of their humble childhoods back home in Argentina. Both had been living and working in the Spanish capital for most of their adults lives but had also spent time in Italy, and both had strong personalities. The relationship quickly blossomed and the couple spent five years together before making the bond legal.
Diego and Carla were secretly wed in a civil ceremony in Argentina in the summer of 2019. Just 50 guests, family and close friends, attended the intimate, low-key ceremony. The newly-wed couple announced their union on June 14.
“We didn’t need a huge party to have a beautiful wedding, so it was perfect. Plus, we actually had time to be with all our guests and share moments with each of them. It was a perfect wedding,” Carla told Vanitatis magazine.
Second wedding in Italy
They exchanged vows again in a second ceremony in Italy, the following September. In total, 97 guests witnessed Diego and Carla tie the knot in a second gathering at Castello di Casole in Tuscany. The couple have two daughters: Francesca and Valentina.
Family life aside, Carla is a successful model and businesswoman. She runs her own home‑renovation company and also serves as an ambassador for the Atlético Madrid Foundation. She insists that she is very much her own person and not just “the wife of...” - “I’m not a footballer’s wife — I’m a coach’s wife. And that’s not exactly the same.”
