FC Barcelona take on Girona in LaLiga EA Sports (Sunday, December 10, with kick off at 3 p.m. ET / noon PT.). Both coaches go into the game with various absences and depleted starting XIs, but that does not stop the excitement from building ahead of the fixture at Montjuïc.

Who is Isidro Díaz de Mera?

For the game, referee Isidro Díaz de Mera Escuderos has been selected, a 34-year-old with relatively little experience in Spain’s top division. He was promoted from the Segunda División in 2020 after 4 seasons there and has since made his name in LaLiga.

Barcelona fans have shown their discontent with the decision to give Díaz de Mera the role of refereeing the game, as he previously took charge of the match between Barcelona and Rayo Vallecano, a game which come fans believe was poorly officiated.

Valentín Pizarro Gómez is in charge of what goes on in the VAR room.

Xavi looks ahead to ‘difficult’ Girona clash

Girona are surprising a lot of people” Xavi said in his pre-match press conference, “but we aren’t surprised at all to see them joint top of the table. They play really well. Míchel is a great coach and their system has a lot in common with our own. We have a difficult opponent to face, whose confidence is sky-high. They’ll make it hard for us, but we won’t change our approach, we’ll be brave and will take the game to them.”

The manager also commented on the mood oat Montjuïc, saying that after the wins against Porto (2-1) and Atlético Madrid (1-0), Barça “are in fine form” and they “need to keep that good football going. It’s really boosted our morale and confidence. We had two huge games to play and tomorrow is another, once again against a direct rival.”
