José María Sánchez Martínez will referee Sunday’s LaLiga fixture between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.

Galician referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva will be in charge of VAR at Camp Nou as the Blaugrana look to edge closer to the league title.

Barcelona are currently top of LaLiga, 13 points ahead of Atlético in third place. Diego Simeone’s side have been in fine form since the World Cup and can even catch Real Madrid in second.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are only two points ahead of Atlético with the same games played (29).

Who is José María Sánchez Martínez?

Born in Lorca, Murcia, on 3 October 1983 - José María Sánchez Martínez is 39.

After four seasons in the Segunda División, Sánchez Martínez became a Primera División referee in the summer of 2015, making his debut in the top flight in a game between Real Sociedad and Sporting de Gijón.

He has also refereed Champions League, Europa League, Conference and Nations League matches.

Sánchez Martínez has officiated a total of 157 matches in LaLiga, showing 859 yellow cards and 18 straight red cards. He has given 44 penalties.

Mateu Lahoz in charge of Real Madrid-Celta

The Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) also confirmed on Thursday that Antonio Mateu Lahoz will referee Real Madrid-Celta Vigo on Saturday, with Santiago Jaime Latre in charge of VAR.
