The Portuguese qualified for the knockout stages by topping Group H ahead of South Korea, and are now tasked with progressing beyond the World Cup last 16 for the first time since they came fourth in Germany in 2006. Having finished as runners-up to Brazil in Group G, meanwhile, the Swiss are into the World Cup knockouts for the fourth time in the last five tournaments. However, they haven’t reached the quarter-finals since 1954.

Portugal and Switzerland last met in the UEFA Nations League earlier this year. In a June double-header, the Seleção earned a 4-0 win in Lisbon, before Murat Yakin’s men hit back with a 1-0 victory in Lancy a week later.

Portugal vs Switzerland: who is referee César Ramos?

A FIFA international referee since 2014, Ramos is officiating at his second World Cup. The 38-year-old oversaw three games in Russia four years ago - including, coincidentally, a last-16 tie involving Portugal. Fernando Santos’ men went down 2-1 to Uruguay in Sochi, in a game that saw Ramos issue just a single yellow card. It went to a frustrated Cristiano Ronaldo in stoppage time, after the Portugal captain remonstrated with the official over a decision.

At World Cup 2022, Ramos has refereed two matches so far: Denmark and Tunisia’s goalless Group D draw on matchday one, and Morocco’s 2-0 Group F win over Belgium on matchday two. He has shown five yellow cards in total in Qatar, and is yet to send anyone off.

Aside from the World Cup, Ramos has experience of a number of other major events. He was the man in the middle for Real Madrid’s 2017 FIFA Club World Cup final triumph over Gremio, and has refereed at the 2016 Olympics, three CONCACAF Gold Cups and the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. His CV also includes several Liga MX and Copa MX finals, and the 2017 CONCACAF Champions League final.
