Brazil will face South Korea in the World Cup last 16 after the five-time champions topped Group G despite their matchday-three defeat to Cameroon on Friday.

Brazil seal top spot in goalless draw

Vincent Aboubakar’s stoppage-time header gave the Cameroonians victory over a much-changed Brazil side, who were already through heading into the final round of group-stage games. Tite’s men progress to the knockout stages as group winners on goal difference, ahead of second-placed Switzerland.

The Seleçao, who have qualified for every World Cup since the tournament’s inception in 1930, have progressed from the group stage at 14 straight editions of the tournament, stretching back to 1970.

Switzerland take second in Group G

Switzerland joined Brazil in the knockout stages after securing second spot with an entertaining win over Serbia.

After Xherdan Shaqiri’s opener for the Swiss midway through the first half, Serbia turned the scoreboard on its head with goals by Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic. However, Breel Embolo levelled for Switzerland just before half time, before Remo Freuler grabbed a winner shortly after the break.

Switzerland finished level on points with Brazil, but while the South Americans ended up with a +2 goal difference, Murat Yakin’s side were one back on +1. The Swiss will take on Group H winners Portugal in the next round.

Cameroon and Serbia go out

Cameroon’s late winner against Brazil was not enough for the Indomitable Lions to end their 32-year wait to return to the World Cup knockout stages. Rigobert Song’s team finished two points adrift of second place. Serbia, meanwhile, come bottom of Group G with just one point.
