Who scored for Saudi Arabia against Argentina in their 2-1 victory in Group C?
Before a ball was kicked, few would have given Saudi Arabia a chance at a point far less a win. Yet, two Saudi stars reminded us that football can be a funny game.
With a truly shocking loss to Saudi Arabia in their Group C opener, World Cup favorites Argentia have found themselves in an unprecedented situation and will now have to fight tooth and nail, to ensure passage to the second round. With that said, let’s take a look at the two men who gave their country an historic win, over one of the giants of world football.
Who is Saleh Al-Shehri?
Following a 10th minute penalty conversion by Leo Messi, it seemed as though the Albiceleste would be marching to an easy victory over Saudi Arabia, but the star and his teammates would soon come to realize the kingdom had other plans for them. Enter Saleh Al-Shehri who scored Saudi Arabia’s equalizer in the 48th minute. The 29-year-old Saudi striker, who plays for Al-Hilal Saudi FC in the Saudi Pro League, scored the vital goal for his side in the early minutes of the second half to bring the Saudis level with the team that many have picked to win the entire tournament. It was in fact Al-Shehri’s 11th goal in his international career and will surely be one that he remembers for all time. Yet there was even more to come.
Salem Aldawasari shocks Argentina and the world
Clearly now in shock, one could see the tension in Argentina’s play, but little did they know it was about to get much worse. In the 53rd minute Saudi Arabia star Salem Aldawsari scored what has got to be considered a wonder goal to put his side 2-1 up over the tournament favorites. With a curling shot from the edge of the box, the winger sent Saudi fans into a frenzy, while Leo Messi and his teammates could only look on in disbelief. With the defeat, Argentina will have no margin for error in their remaining games, while the Saudis have announced themselves to the group and the wider world.
