Experienced Argentine coach Antonio Mohamed is open to taking over at Liga MX club Cruz Azul, AS has learned.

Gutiérrez out after bad start to Clausura 2023

The nine-time Mexican champions fired Raúl ‘El Potro’ Gutiérrez on Monday after a poor start to the Clausura 2023 tournament, with the side currently second bottom in the regular-season standings.

Cruz Azul long-term Mohamed admirers

Mohamed is a coach that has attracted interest from Cruz Azul on a number of previous occasions. The closest he came to taking charge at the Estadio Azteca was in 2019, after the departure of Pedro Caixinha.

The then-sports director of the club, Ricardo Peláez, began negotiations with the 52-year-old, but despite talks reaching an advanced stage, it was finally Robert Siboldi who was handed the reins. The Mexico City club’s decision to go with Siboldi prompted Peláez’s resignation.

Mohamed was then a contender for the Cruz Azul job before Juan Reynoso was announced as La Máquina’s new head coach in 2021, and was also tipped to succeed Diego Aguirre last year.

Mohamed a coach with plenty of Liga MX pedigree

‘El Turco’ has coached several clubs in Mexico. He led Tijanua to the Liga MX Apertura championship in 2012, before winning the Apertura 2014 with Club América two years later. With Monterrey, he lifted the Apertura 2019 title, as well as two Copa MXs.

Mohamed’s most recent coaching job saw him steer Brazilians Atlético Mineiro to the Supercopa do Brasil - the seventh trophy of his career.
