Why are Real Madrid players not wearing retro uniforms against Girona?
Los Blancos will be the obvious exception when LaLiga rolls out its league-wide retro matchday this weekend against Girona.

Spanish soccer is embracing nostalgia this weekend during Matchday 31, with LaLiga introducing a first-of-its-kind initiative where nearly every club will wear vintage-inspired uniforms. Broadcasts and social media content will also adopt retro-style graphics, while referees and even the match ball will follow the same throwback theme. The idea was ambitious as LaLiga aimed to turn a single round of games into a global cultural moment, blending sport, fashion, and history in a way rarely seen in soccer.
But Real Madrid will not be part of it.
Why Real Madrid players aren’t wearing retro kits
The short answer to why Bellingham, Mbappé and co. are turning up looking as usual is simple: the club has just chosen not to participate this season.
LaLiga confirmed last month that while Real Madrid did not formally oppose the campaign, it opted out of wearing a retro uniform for now. There has been no detailed public explanation from the club, though league officials had hopeful the situation could change.
“We hope and trust that they will join next season,” LaLiga sources said.
That means when Madrid face Girona on Friday (yes, Friday), they will do so in their standard, modern kit while most other teams sport designs inspired by their past.

Real Madrid not only retro avoider
Real Madrid are not entirely alone in skipping the retro look this weekend. FC Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano, and Getafe CF also stated that they would not wear vintage kits, though in their cases the issue is logistical. Some could still make a last-minute effort.
Those clubs are said to have faced production delays and are expected to fully join the initiative next season.
Madrid’s absence, however, stands out for different reasons. As one of the most globally recognized teams in the sport, its participation would have added significant weight to the campaign. And just look at the amazing options available to them!
So, despite a few high-profile absences, LaLiga is doing something that I believe no other major league has ever done, transforming an entire matchday into a coordinated retro experience on this scale. And it’s expected to continue for at least two more seasons.
For now, though, Real Madrid fans hoping to see a throwback look against Girona will have to wait. Now, where’s my signed Zamorano Teka-sponsored one?
