The 2022 Club World Cup is poised to begin in Morocco as Real Madrid, Flamengo, Al-Hilal, Wydad Casablanca, Auckland City, Al-Ahly and Seattle Sounders are set to battle to be champion of the world.

This, however will be the first Club World Cup competition since 2005, with no Mexican club in action the tournament after Seattle Sounders beat Pumas in the CONCACAF Champions League final last year.

After a 16-year continuous run of Mexican teams representing Concacaf at the Club World Cup, this will be the first year since 2005 when Costa Rica’s Saprissa represented the region that no Liga MX sides will be present at the FIFA tournament.

Pumas advanced to last year’s final but fell to MLS outfit Seattle Sounders in a 5-2 aggregate scoreline hence breaking the stranglehold Mexican clubs held in participating at the tournament.

How have Mexican clubs fared in the past?

Unfortunately, no Mexican side gas gone onto win the competition with Tigres going closest in 2020, when they played in the final against Bayern Munich but ended up losing 1-0 to the Bundesliga side.
