Why could Club América miss out on hiring former Monterrey boss Diego Alonso as their head coach?
Alonso won trophies with Pachuca and Rayados and is available after leaving the Uruguay national team following the 2022 World Cup.
Finding a new head coach is proving to be something of a challenge for Club América and their sporting president Santiago Baños, whose search for a replacement for Fernando Ortiz, who has now joined Monterrey, has taken him to Europe. At the top of the board’s list of priorities is to begin talks with former Pachuca and Rayados boss Diego Alonso, who is thought to be amongst the front-runners after leaving his post as Uruguay manager in December last year.
América target Alonso looking to Europe
Alonso’s successful spell in Mexico makes him an attractive option for América, who are on the lookout for an experienced head coach. However, sources close to AS Mexico have claimed that while the Uruguayan is open to speaking to Las Águilas about the post, his preference would be to continue his management career in Europe, should the opportunity present itself.

América may therefore have their work cut out to convince Alonso to return to Liga MX after four years away, during which time he spent just over 12 months with MLS team Inter Miami before guiding Uruguay to the 2022 World Cup, where they disappointingly failed to make it past the group stage. It appears as if Mexico’s most successful club will have to go on a charm offensive and make Alonso a generous offer if they are to acquire his services.
The ex-Uruguayan international striker led Pachuca to the Clausura 2016 title and then twice lifted the Concacaf Champions League trophy, first with Los Tuzos in 2017 and again with Monterrey in 2019.
