Two reasons Chicago Fire stepped back from Robert Lewandowski pursuit
Chicago Fire had been keen on signing Lewandowski from Barcelona, but their interest has reportedly cooled.

Major League Soccer is once again preparing for a busy summer window, with the league continuing to attract high-profile international names.
Following recent arrivals such as James Rodríguez, Heung-Min Son, and Timo Werner, among others, MLS has reinforced its growing reputation as a destination for established global talent alongside Lionel Messi, the league’s marquee figure.
More players are now reportedly on their way to the United States as clubs look to strengthen ahead of the second half of the season.
Chicago Fire previously explored Lewandowski move
One of the most notable names linked to MLS interest was Robert Lewandowski, with the Chicago Fire among the clubs that had held exploratory talks to assess a potential move for the Barcelona striker once his contract situation evolved.
The Polish forward has long been viewed as a potential blockbuster signing for the league, given his track record with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

Fire shift direction amid Barcelona uncertainty
However, Chicago Fire’s pursuit of Lewandowski has taken an unexpected turn in recent weeks.
According to The Athletic, the club’s leadership has redirected its focus elsewhere, effectively pausing its interest in the veteran striker.
The report indicates that uncertainty over whether Lewandowski will remain at Barcelona, including the possibility of a new contract extension, has contributed to Chicago’s decision to step back from negotiations for now.

Chicago Fire back Hugo Cuypers
At the same time, Chicago Fire are reassessing their internal options in attack.
Hugo Cuypers, who is under contract through 2026 with an option that could extend his stay beyond 2027, has become increasingly central to the club’s plans under head coach Gregg Berhalter.
The Belgian forward has been in fine form, scoring six goals in five matches this season, and has quickly established himself as a key offensive threat.
As a result, the Fire’s immediate priority has shifted away from a marquee signing like Lewandowski, instead focusing on strengthening other areas of the squad while continuing to build around Cuypers’ production in front of goal.
