CONCACAF Champions Cup

Why Eduardo Torres was sent off for Chivas against América

As if the result of the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup wasn’t bad enough, the Rebaño Sagrado player had a night to forget.

The Rebaño Sagrado were left with 10 men on the field at Estadio Akron, after Eduardo Torres was sent off in the second half of the match. It’s worth noting that he was also responsible for conceding the penalty kick that Julián Quiñones converted to give América the lead against Chivas in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16, which finished 0-3.

Torres off, Chivas almost out

Torres received his first yellow card in the first half when he made a sliding tackle to prevent Quiñones from reaching the ball in the box. The referee didn’t hesitate to book him for obstructing a clear goal-scoring opportunity for América.

In the second half, around the 60th minute of the match and with the score still at 0-1, Torres attempted to stop Quiñones with both men clashing heads, resulting in a cut to the head for the Chivas player. However, the referee didn’t hesitate to show Torres a second yellow card, sending him off early.

Quiñones remained on the field, receiving medical attention. He drank water and returned to the game because he only suffered a strong blow to the mouth, which caused bleeding but didn’t require him to be substituted.
