Why is Liverpool playing Wolves again just three days after their last game?

Update:

Liverpool’s last Premier League game was one to forget for Arne Slot’s team, who fell 2-1 to bottom-of-the-table Wolves on Tuesday. The reigning champions were heavy favorites but were undone by André’s injury-time goal.

The good news for The Reds is they get an immediate chance for revenge, returning to Molineux for the second time this week on Friday.

FA Cup luck sends Liverpool back to Wolves

By complete coincidence, Liverpool were drawn to play Wolves in the fifth round of the FA Cup only three days after their Premier League meeting. The Merseysiders could have faced 14 other teams, but were sent back to Wolverhampton. A quick twist of the fixture list, if nothing else.

Changes ahead for Champions League clash

With Slot’s side facing Galatasaray in the Champions League round of 16 next week, several changes to the starting lineup are likely. Giorgi Mamardashvili looks set to replace Alisson Becker in goal, while Andy Robertson, Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones are among those pushing for a spot in the team.

FA Cup history on the line

Liverpool are one of 11 Premier League clubs still in this year’s FA Cup. Should they defeat Wolves, they could face Arsenal, Manchester City or Chelsea in the quarterfinals, or even later rounds.

Along with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool are the third most successful team in FA Cup history, winning the trophy eight times. They trail only Arsenal (14) and Manchester United (13).

Wolves, meanwhile, have lifted the trophy four times, though their last triumph came in 1960.
