Premier League

Why isn’t Bruno Fernandes playing for Manchester United against Newcastle in the Premier League today?

United have lost four league games out of five and have a midfield dilemma against The Magpies, partly caused by captain Fernandes’ absence.

Update:

Manchester United’s decision to replace Erik Ten Hag with Rubén Amorim has yet to pay obvious dividends in terms of results. The Red Devils go into Monday’s game at home to Newcastle on the back of four defeats in five Premier League games and without the services of captain Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese has become United’s talisman since joining the club in 2020 but will be powerless to help his teammates against the Magpies after being sent off in the 2-0 defeat to Wolves on Boxing Day (December 26).

Having already been booked in the 18th minute, Fernandes was shown a second yellow card just after half time, with the score at 0-0. Amorim’s team were unable to overcome their numerical disadvantage, losing two goals in the second half.

The 30-year-old has incurred a one-match suspension as a result, which he serves against Newcastle. The sending off was Fernandes' third of the season.

Manuel Ugarte also suspended for Newcastle visit

Fernandes is just of two United midfielders banned for Monday’s game. Manuel Ugarte was shown his fifth yellow card of the season in the loss to Wolves, also leading to a one-game ban.

Victor Lindelof, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw all miss out through injury, although Marcus Rashford is recalled to the squad after being left out in recent weeks.

What are the Premier League’s yellow card suspension rules?

Premier League rules state that players who receive five yellow cards at any point in their first 19 games are given a one-match suspension. As the season progresses, any player who is booked 10 times in their first 32 games is then given a two-match ban.
