Champions League

Why isn’t Serge Gnabry playing for Bayern Munich against PSG today in Champions League semifinal first leg?

The forward is out for the rest of the season - and will also miss this summer’s World Cup after suffering a freak injury in training.

Serge Gnabry made the trip to Paris for this evening’s Champions League semifinal first leg against PSG but he won’t be taking to the pitch at Parc des Princes.

The 31-year-old traveled to lend emotional support to his team mates as Bayern Munich attempt to land their place in the final for the first time since 2020.

High price for penalty practice

Gnabry meanwhile faces a long stint on the sidelines. He ruptured the adductor muscle in his right thigh while practicing penalties in training. On April 18, Bayern confirmed the injury, describing the setback as “very unfortunate” in a statement.

The winger will be out for several weeks, meaning that he will miss both legs of the Champions League semi-final against PSG as well as the final - if Bayern advance. His chances of going to the World Cup also look slim. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann is expected to announce his World Cup squad on Tuesday May 12, but Gnabry will still be deep in his recovery program.

“As for the World Cup dream with Germany, that’s sadly over for me,” Gnabry wrote on Instagram. “Like the rest of the country I’ll be supporting the boys from home.”

Gnabry’s seventh Bundesliga title, number 34 for Bayern

The No.7 has made 21 appearances in Bayern’s Bundesliga campaign this season, contributing eight goals and six assists to help the club clinch their 34th title. In this season’s Champions League, he has missed just one game - the matchday 3 clash with Brugge, curiously, due to adductor pain.
