Real Madrid starlet Linda Caicedo is one of the hottest prospects in women’s soccer and inevitably marked her Women’s World Cup debut with a goal in Colombia’s opening Group H game against South Korea in Sydney on Tuesday. However, she gave her nation - and indeed everyone else - an almighty fright in training on Thursday.

The 18-year-old was filmed suddenly grabbing her chest and slumping to the ground while taking part in a training session, sparking fears that something had gone horribly wrong, particular in the wake of the news basketball star and fellow teenager Bronny James suffering a cardiac arrest earlier this week.

On this occasion, it seems as if the incident was nothing more than a momentary scare, with Caicedo able to resume training and finish the session. What the problem was remains something of a mystery, but a member of the Colombian FA’s medical staff has stated that the striker will be able to play in Las Cafeteras’ remaining matches in the competition, starting against Germany in Sydney on Sunday.

Caicedo “very tired” but “back to normal”

“Linda is very tired. What happened was just a symptom of all the stress and physical demands. She is well and all is back to normal.

All eyes would have been on Caicedo even before her training ground mishap and that scrutiny will now intensify following Thursday’s events. The Real Madrid forward was diagnosed with ovarian cancer aged 15 but won that battle to make her dream of becoming a professional soccer player come true.
