After beating Portugal in their 2023 Women’s World Cup opener at the weekend, the Netherlands could now seal last-16 qualification with a game to spare.

Dutch set for box-office USWNT match-up

In a repeat of the 2019 final, Andries Jonker’s side face the United States in their second group-stage match on Wednesday, with the Dutch out to avenge their 2-0 defeat to the Stars and Stripes in the trophy decider four years ago. Should the Oranje beat the USWNT, their place in the knockout stages will be guaranteed if matchday two’s other Group E game, between Portugal and Vietnam, ends in a draw.

However, the Netherlands will have to end a three-decade winless run against the USWNT if they’re to take all three points against the four-time world champions. They last defeated the Americans in a 1991 friendly.

The Netherlands' 2023 Women’s World Cup fixtures

  • 23 July: Netherlands 1-0 Portugal, Dunedin Stadium
  • 27 July: USWNT vs Netherlands, Wellington Regional Stadium
  • 1 August: Netherlands vs Vietnam, Dunedin Stadium

How it stands in Group E:

The Netherlands’ 2023 Women’s World Cup squad:

Jonker, who replaced Englishman Mark Parsons as the Netherlands’ head coach in August 2022, named his 23-player squad for the Women’s World Cup on 30 June.

The most notable absentee from the 2017 European champions’ travelling party is Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema, whose 95 international goals make her the Netherlands’ all-time highest scorer. Miedema, 27, confirmed in April that she would not recover from an ACL injury in time to make the tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

In Miedema’s absence, midfielder Jill Roord is the Dutch’s star name at the Women’s World Cup. After starring for Wolfsburg as the Germans reached last season’s Women’s Champions League final, the 26-year-old this month joined Women’s Super League club Manchester City for a club-record fee reported to be in excess of £300,000 ($385,000).
