World Cup 2022, Argentina vs Poland: Everything you need to know

Lionel Messi and Argentina will face Robert Lewandowski and Poland in their final group stage match of the World Cup on Wednesday.

Update:

You can follow the live action of the crucial game between Messi’s Argentina and Lewandowski’s Poland on As.com.

The standings in Group C right now really signify that anything can happen as far as which teams will qualify for the Round of 16. It’s pretty complicated, but we’ve broken it down as easily as possible for you here: Group C: What each team needs to qualify for the round of 16 of the World Cup

As it stands now, Poland are at the top of the group, followed by Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico. All four teams play their final group stage games on Wednesday, but in my very objective opinion of course, the Poland vs Argentina game is the more exciting of the two.

A win for either Poland or Argentina would guarantee them a qualification in the Round of 16. A draw or a loss is where things get complicated. But let’s check out the two teams and where they stand, who they might play, and what we can expect when Poland and Argentina face each other on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. ET at Stadium 974.

Poland in the group stage of the World Cup

Poland finished their opening group stage game against Mexico in a scoreless draw. But in their game against Saudi Arabia, they got their goals, one of which was scored by star striker Robert Lewandowski. At 34 years old and after five World Cups, plus missing a penalty shot in their 0-0 match with Mexico, Lewandowski finally broke the curse and got a World Cup goal for the first time in his career in Poland’s 2-0 defeat of Saudi Arabia.

Poland now sit at the top of Group C and will be looking to make it into the knockout stage for the first time since 1986. They are one of just two nations who have not conceded a goal in the first two matches of the group stage, but it won’t be so easy against Lionel Messi and Argentina. The last time Poland and Argentina played each other though, Poland came out on top in a 2-1 victory in a friendly in 2011.

If Poland beats Argentina, they will secure their spot in the Round of 16 and the top spot in Group C. They could still advance with a draw as long as Mexico beat Saudi Arabia. If Poland lose to Argentina and Saudi Arabia claim maximum points, Poland will be eliminated from the World Cup.

Argentina in the group stage of the World Cup

Argentina suffered one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history when they lost to Saudi Arabia in their World Cup opener, 2-1. They got their redemption when they beat Mexico 2-0 in the second game, though, and now they are sitting second in Group C, even on three points with Saudi Arabia and just one point behind Poland at the top.

It was superstar Lionel Messi who scored the first goal for Argentina against Saudi Arabia, stepping up after a slow first half to get the momentum going. Many listed Argentina as the favorites to win the whole World Cup before the tournament started, and after that victory, hope seemed to be restored.

Argentina have made it to the knockout stage of the World Cup in 12 of their last 13 tournaments, but have lost their last two meetings with European nations in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

If Argentina wins, they will advance. If they win and Saudi Arabia loses or draws, Argentina will win the group. If Argentina loses, they will be eliminated.
