1970 World Cup champion with Brazil dies as 2026 edition kicks off
Hércules Brito Ruas, better known simply as Brito, has died at the age of 86 due to complications from pneumonia in a hospital on Ilha do Governador, a neighborhood in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro. His death was announced through an Instagram account managed by his family.
Goodbye to Brito: a Brazilian World Cup legend
The former defender was part of Brazil’s iconic 1970 World Cup-winning team in Mexico, and his passing came on the same day the 2026 World Cup kicked off across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Brito started every match during Brazil’s victorious campaign at the 1970 tournament. His leadership and physical presence were key components of the side that secured the Seleção’s third World Cup title. He made a total of 61 appearances for Brazil.
At club level, Brito began his professional career with Vasco da Gama, where he played more than 400 matches. He also represented Flamengo, the club he was with when he became a world champion in 1970. He later joined Cruzeiro and finished his career with spells at Internacional, Corinthians, Athletico Paranaense, Democrata-GV, and River-PI.
Remembered as one of the defensive pillars of one of the greatest teams in soccer history, Brito leaves behind a lasting legacy in Brazilian football.
