Argentina confirmed starting lineup vs Spain: Lionel Scaloni’s XI for the 2026 World Cup final
Rodrigo De Paul returns but Leandro Paredes drops out as Argentina look for the right midfield balance to take on Spain in the World Cup final.

Argentina is preparing for its eighth and final game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Spain standing between Lionel Scaloni’s side and another world title. In what feels like the Finalissima that never happened after the planned March meeting in Qatar was canceled, Scaloni’s biggest decision centered on how to set up his midfield to counter Spain’s possession-based style.
One key question already appeared to have been answered up front. Julián Álvarez reclaims his place alongside Lionel Messi after rotating with Lautaro Martínez for stretches of the tournament, despite Lautaro’s heroics in the semifinal.

De Paul returns to the starting lineup
The remaining uncertainty had been in midfield.
Rodrigo De Paul returns to the starting XI after his surprise omission against England. The former Atlético Madrid midfielder made a major impact off the bench in that game, helping spark Argentina’s comeback.
Scaloni opted for a more attack-minded approach on the right flank by starting Giuliano Simeone against the Three Lions, leaving the Inter Miami midfielder on the bench. Finding the right balance in that role has been one of the toughest selection dilemmas for Scaloni and his coaching staff throughout the tournament.
Nico González over Paredes
Thiago Almada was also given opportunities earlier in the competition, but Leandro Paredes’ return to the lineup had added greater defensive stability.
However, Scaloni has opted to start winger Nico González in the final, leaving Paredes on the bench. With Paredes anchoring the midfield, Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernández had been given the freedom to push forward and support the attack, although they will have to have one eye on what’s going on behind them against Spain.
