Argentina’s unusual FIFA request granted before England semifinal

Argentina made an unusual request ahead of their World Cup semifinal against England in Atlanta on Wednesday, asking FIFA for permission to wear their dark blue away kit instead of their traditional blue and white jersey.
The request was approved by soccer’s governing body, but the decision is not based on tactical reasons. For Argentina, the shirt carries a powerful historical meaning, with the shadow of Diego Maradona looming large over the choice.
Argentina’s lucky shirt against England
The request came less than 48 hours before the highly anticipated semifinal. Under normal circumstances, England, as the designated home team, would wear their famous white jersey, while Argentina would take the field in their iconic blue and white stripes.
However, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) proposed wearing the dark blue kit, and FIFA granted approval.
Behind the decision are a series of superstitions and memories that have turned the shirt into something of a good-luck charm in Argentina. The dark blue jersey is closely associated with some of the country’s greatest victories over England at the World Cup.
The Maradona connection
The most famous example came at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Wearing the blue shirt, Diego Maradona scored his legendary “Hand of God” goal during Argentina’s 2-1 quarterfinal victory over England.
That same match also saw Maradona score one of the greatest goals in World Cup history, as Argentina advanced to the semifinals on the way to winning the tournament.
Twelve years later, Argentina again wore the blue kit against England in the round of 16 at the 1998 World Cup. The Albiceleste won on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw, a game remembered in part for David Beckham’s controversial red card.
For many Argentine fans, the shirt represents more than just an alternative uniform. It is a symbol of some of the country’s most iconic moments against their historic rivals.
