It’s well documented that European and South American national teams have dominated the FIFA World Cup since its inaugural edition in 1930.

Of the 22 previous editions, every tournament has been won by a country from either of those two continents, a run that will extend to 23 this year with Spain and Argentina facing off in the final.

Overall, Europe holds a slender lead, with 12 victories to South America’s 10. However, the story is very different when it comes to head-to-head meetings between national teams from those different parts of the world.

South America has dominated World Cup finals against Europe

Before 2026, 11 World Cup finals featured a UEFA member against a CONMEBOL nation. History shows the rivalry has been particularly one-sided.

South American nations have won eight of those 11 finals, including the first five.

• 1958: Brazil 5-2 Sweden
• 1962: Brazil 3-1 Czechoslovakia
• 1970: Brazil 4-1 Italy
• 1978: Argentina 3-1 Netherlands (a.e.t.)
• 1986: Argentina 3-2 West Germany
• 1994: Brazil 0-0 Italy (Brazil won 3-2 on penalties)
• 2002: Brazil 2-0 Germany
• 2022: Argentina 3-3 France (Argentina won 4-2 on penalties)

Can Spain change the trend?

A European finalist did not defeat a South American opponent until 1990, when West Germany edged Argentina in Italy. Since then, the head-to-head has been more balanced, although CONMEBOL still holds a commanding overall advantage.
