By a twist of fate, the Round of 32 bracket for the 2026 tournament could have placed the runner-up of Group D against the runner-up of Group G. That scenario could have set up a meeting between Iran and the United States, a matchup that would have carried meaning far beyond soccer.

The condition is simple. If both teams had finished second in their respective groups, and if Iran remains in the World Cup, the nations would have meet on Friday, July 3, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

But, as it stands, the USMNT top Group D with six points after losing their final game against Turkey.

Iran meanwhile sit second in Group G with two points from their first two games against New Zealand and Belgium.

We’ll have to see where Iran finishes in Group G and what chances they have to face Team USA later in the tournament if both teams continue to advance.

USMNT vs Iran: previous meetings

At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the United States defeated Iran 1-0 in the group stage, a result that eliminated the Asian side. The matchup came on the final day of Group B. England was already close to advancing, but the second spot was still open. Iran entered with three points after beating Wales and knew a draw would be enough. The United States, with two points from draws against Wales and England, needed a win.

That combination made for a high-pressure game from the opening whistle. A goal by Christian Pulisic just before halftime tipped the balance in favor of the Americans, who held on during a second half push from Iran. The 1-0 result added another competitive chapter to a rivalry that now carries far heavier undertones.

A World Cup history loaded with symbolism

Looking further back, their meeting at the 1998 FIFA World Cup remains one of the most politically symbolic matches in tournament history. On that occasion, Iran defeated the United States 2-1 in a game that drew worldwide attention far beyond the field.

Now, at a particularly sensitive moment, the possibility of another showdown looms in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. If the second-place teams from Groups D and G happen to align, Arlington could become the stage for one of the most watched games of the entire tournament.
