“I would trade my five Champions League titles for it” - Marcelo
In an interview on Romário’s YouTube channel, the former Real Madrid player talks about his career at the club, and the 2014 World Cup.

Marcelo Vieira sat down with Romário on his YouTube channel for a wide-ranging conversation about a career that spanned eras, triumphs and setbacks. The former Real Madrid and Brazil defender revisited his early days in Spain, his difficult farewell at Fluminense and the emotional fallout from Brazil’s infamous 7-1 loss to Germany at the 2014 World Cup. He also revealed his picks for the next global tournament.
“When I arrived, I realized how big Real Madrid was”
Marcelo made his Real Madrid debut on January 7, 2007, and quickly understood the scale of the club he had joined. “When I arrived, I realized how big Real Madrid was,” he said, recalling how the training environment and the quality of the squad left an immediate impression. That was the moment he truly grasped what it meant to play at the Santiago Bernabéu.
He also spoke warmly about Roberto Carlos, who helped him settle in and supported both him and his family during those early months. With 546 appearances, Marcelo stands as the second foreign player with the most games in club history, behind only Karim Benzema.
One of the most revealing moments of the interview came when Romário posed a hypothetical: would Marcelo trade his five Champions League titles for a World Cup with Brazil? After a brief pause, he answered candidly: “That’s a tough question… I’ll be honest with you – I would trade them.” Asked to choose between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, he acknowledged the privilege of having watched both, but ultimately chose: “Messi. Messi is incredible.”
“The worst defeat of my career”
Marcelo was part of one of the darkest chapters in Brazil’s football history. He played in the 2014 World Cup on home soil, alongside Neymar Jr., as Brazil reached the semifinals. What followed against Germany remains one of the most shocking results in the sport.
Brazil’s 1-7 defeat at the Maracanã left a lasting mark. Marcelo described it as the worst game of his career: “We felt Neymar’s injury. They were very well organized, they played beautifully. It was like a nightmare you want to wake up from.”

He added that the team had been in such strong form that they fully expected to reach the final, even imagining a showdown with Argentina. Instead, the loss became a national trauma. Marcelo said the experience ultimately helped him learn to manage emotions and understand defeat at the highest level.
Looking ahead, he named his favorites for the next World Cup: “In no particular order… Brazil, Spain, France and Argentina.”
“He pushed me and told me I wasn’t going on”
Marcelo’s career came to an end on February 6, 2025, at Fluminense, though not in the way he had hoped. His final days were marked by a disagreement with coach Mano Menezes during a game against Grêmio.
According to the coach, Marcelo reacted poorly to instructions and was told to return to the bench. The player offered his own version of events: “It wasn’t coming on late that bothered me. What happened was simple. He didn’t speak to me in training, there was no conversation, nothing to help me improve. Then in that moment he hugged me and spoke to me, and I said, ‘You don’t need to do that because you normally don’t talk to me.’ He pushed me and told me I wasn’t going on.”
Following the incident, Marcelo terminated his contract, bringing an end to a legendary career on a bittersweet note.
