South African soccer is in mourning following the death of midfielder Jayden Adams, who has died at the age of 25, initially reported by Sunday World News and later confirmed by the South African Football Players Union.
Adams’ death comes just weeks after he represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he played an important role in the Bafana Bafana squad that reached the knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history.
Romano also recalled the personal hardship Adams endured during the tournament. Just two weeks before his death, the midfielder lost his grandmother, Marianna Adams. Despite the devastating loss, he chose to play in South Africa’s World Cup match against the Czech Republic.
From Stellenbosch prospect to South Africa international
Born in Cape Town on May 5, 2001, Adams played as a central midfielder. He came through the academy at Stellenbosch FC before making his senior debut in 2020, quickly establishing himself as one of South Africa’s brightest emerging talents.
During his time at Stellenbosch, he made more than 100 official appearances before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2025, one of Africa’s most successful clubs. He went on to play around 40 matches for the Pretoria side and was part of the squad that enjoyed an impressive run in the CAF Champions League.
Adams made his senior debut for South Africa in 2022, earning nine caps and scoring two international goals.
His 2026 World Cup appearances
At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Adams featured in three matches for South Africa.
He started the 2-0 defeat to Mexico, started the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic, and came off the bench in the 1-0 victory over South Korea.
He did not feature in South Africa’s 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32. Overall, he played three matches during the tournament, making two starts and recording no goals or assists.

Western Cape Police said they are investigating after the body of a 25-year-old man was found at a home in Cape Town on Saturday morning. Authorities have not released any further details, while rumors of foul play circulate on social media.
