Jordan Pickford has already rescued England once at this World Cup. Now comes the assignment that could define his international career: stopping Erling Haaland. The Everton goalkeeper heads into Saturday’s quarterfinal against Norway in outstanding form, but history suggests the Manchester City striker has had the upper hand whenever the two have met.

England has produced better goalkeepers over the years, but few have been as distinctive as Jordan Pickford. For several seasons now, the 32-year-old Everton goalkeeper has been the unquestioned No. 1 for the Three Lions. With all of his strengths, flaws and unmistakable personality, Pickford has become one of England’s most important players.

That has been true under both Gareth Southgate, who handed him his senior debut in 2017, and current head coach Thomas Tuchel. For many England fans, however, Pickford has grown into something more than just a great goalkeeper.

What is Pickford’s record against Haaland?

Now Pickford faces his toughest challenge yet. In the World Cup quarterfinals he will come up against Erling Haaland, a familiar Premier League opponent and perhaps the goalkeeper’s biggest nightmare.

As noted on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, seven of Haaland’s last 10 shots against Pickford have found the back of the net. The Norway striker has also scored seven goals from 18 shots at this World Cup. If England wants to lift the trophy again, and if Pickford hopes to cement his place as the greatest goalkeeper in the country’s history, he’ll have to stop the Norwegian goal machine in his tracks.

England fans can at least draw hope from one previous duel. Playing for Everton in the Premier League in December 2024, Pickford pulled a series of exaggerated faces and gestures in an apparent attempt to distract Haaland before a penalty.

The mind games worked. Haaland sent his spot kick to Pickford’s right, but the England goalkeeper guessed correctly to make the save, becoming the first goalkeeper to deny the Norwegian from the penalty spot in the Premier League.

Pickford at the 2026 World Cup

Pickford has started every match of England’s World Cup campaign and, before the Mexico game, had already kept two clean sheets, taking his career World Cup total to six, a mark that moved him into elite company among goalkeepers in tournament history.

Pickford was key to England’s scraping past Mexico, when they were down to 10 men.

“It was an unbelievable performance from him. I’m absolutely delighted for him. I loved seeing the energy in his eyes at the end of the game. He’s a world-class goalkeeper. He’s made spectacular saves all season, so we know he’s capable of it, but he brought so much more to the match. He was absolutely outstanding. When England, down to 10 men, decided to sit deep and defend for everything, Jordan Pickford became the leader. Once again, he stepped up in a knockout game for England,” former England goalkeeper Joe Hart said on BBC One after the Three Lions battled past Mexico to reach the quarterfinals, where they face Norway.

“He’s been absolutely brilliant”

Pickford finished with three saves, five punches and five clearances, keeping England alive at the Azteca Stadium during the team’s toughest moments. Everton praised his “masterclass” on social media, calling him a “national treasure” and paying tribute to Diego Maradona’s famous “Hand of God” with the nickname “Hand of Jord.”

Other former England stars, including David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer and Paul Robinson, also showered the goalkeeper with praise, describing his display as “perfect,” “exceptional,” “brilliant” and “excellent.”

The Round of 16 victory marked Pickford’s 89th appearance for England and his 17th World Cup match, tying the legendary Peter Shilton for the most World Cup appearances by an England goalkeeper. That milestone has sparked a debate across England ahead of the quarterfinal against Norway.

Who is England’s best ever goalkeeper?

When Sky Sports asked fans, “Who is England’s greatest goalkeeper of all time?” 32% chose Pickford. Only Gordon Banks, the goalkeeper who helped England win the 1966 World Cup, ranked higher with 54% of the vote. Shilton finished third with 9%. Surpassing a legend who starred for clubs including Leicester City, Nottingham Forest and Southampton is no small achievement.
