Paris braces for a long night amid possible tension and unrest as France face Morocco in Thursday’s quarter final clash at the 2026 World Cup. As reported by Le Parisien, the French capital is preparing a special security plan to prevent outbreaks and disturbances in the streets. The local police authority has already issued an order allowing security drones to fly over the city to ensure what should be a football celebration is not spoiled.

The most recent precedent dates back to 2022, when, after France defeated Morocco in the semifinals of the Qatar World Cup, more than 266 arrests were made across France, 167 of which occurred in Paris. The local police department, whose decree will take effect from 9:00 p.m. this Thursday (the match kicks off at 10:00 p.m. French time), also announced a ban on any pyrotechnic materials and the use of fireworks.

The Champs-Élysées, the epicenter of disturbances during recent UEFA Champions League celebrations, will be sealed off at all times and some shopkeepers will board up their premises to prevent looting. Authorities also ordered the closure of the metro stations nearest the famous avenue to avoid large crowds. On line 6, stops between Charles de Gaulle-Étoile and Trocadéro will be closed for the entire night.

Several stations on metro lines 8, 9, 12 and 14 will also be unavailable to reduce the presence of fans in the Champs-Élysées area during and after the quarterfinal match. The Moroccan diaspora in Paris is one of the city’s largest communities, numbering, according to French government data, 300,000 residents in the capital’s metropolitan area, rising to 2.2 million nationwide. The match has been deemed high-risk by the local law enforcement body, which has acted swiftly to prevent major disturbances overnight.
