Pelé, Maradona and now... Lamine Yamal?

Although the final took place in New York rather than at the Estadio Azteca, as it did for Pelé and Maradona, the teenage star also left his mark on Mexican soil during the group stage against Uruguay.

The comparisons are not based solely on geography. Lamine’s extraordinary talent naturally places him in conversations alongside the game’s greatest names. At an age when most players are still finding their place at senior level, he has already amassed achievements that once seemed reserved for established veterans. His ability to influence matches, embrace responsibility and consistently perform on the biggest stages has fuelled expectations that his career could reach historic heights.

No one can say whether Lamine Yamal will ultimately leave a legacy comparable to that of Pelé or Maradona. Both built extraordinary careers that reshaped football and continue to influence the game decades later. Reaching that level requires far more than winning a World Cup. It demands sustained excellence, dominance over many years and a catalogue of unforgettable moments.

Football, however, has always thrived on symbolism. Mexico witnessed the defining triumphs of two players widely regarded as the greatest of all time. Now, another generational talent has written the opening chapter of his own World Cup story in a tournament that also passed through Mexican soil. Perhaps it is merely a coincidence.

Or perhaps there is something about the country’s enduring World Cup mystique. Only time will provide the answer, but the conversation has already begun. For now, Lamine Yamal has taken his place among the rare few who appear destined to challenge history.
