Spain fan’s World Cup promise leaves him with a very unexpected tattoo
Spain’s World Cup victory over Argentina meant one supporter had to follow through on a wager involving Lamine Yamal’s little brother.
Soccer fans regularly make bold promises before major matches. Some vow to shave their heads, dye their hair or get a tattoo if their team wins.
One Spanish supporter, however, not only promised to get a tattoo, they also chose a rather unexpected design.
Before the 2026 World Cup final, he promised that if Spain became world champion, he would get a tattoo of Keyne, the young half-brother of Spain star Lamine Yamal.
Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina meant there was no backing out. The fan duly visited a tattoo parlor and had Keyne’s image permanently inked onto his arm.
The text reads: “What seemed like an impossible promise ended up becoming reality. One Spanish fan followed through on a wager he had made before the 2026 World Cup final and, after Spain were crowned champions, decided to have an image of Lamine Yamal’s little brother tattooed on his arm.
The tattoo, which shows the youngster wearing a Spain jersey alongside the word “¡Vamos!”, quickly went viral on social media, where thousands of users reacted with surprise, amusement and admiration for the level of detail in the design.
The unusual wager was born during the World Cup, and many people assumed the fan would never have to go through with it. But Spain’s victory left him no choice but to honor his promise, creating one of the most bizarre and memorable moments to emerge from the 2026 World Cup."
Keyne’s celebration that’s now been permanently inked onto an arm came during Spain’s 3-0 victory over Austria in the round of 32. After Mikel Oyarzabal scored Spain’s third goal, Keyne clenched his fists, adopted a pose resembling the Incredible Hulk and enthusiastically yelled “¡Vamos!” The image became one of the defining images of the tournament.
Who is Lamine Yamal?
Lamine Yamal only turned 19 during the World Cup, but he was already one of the most recognizable players in international soccer before helping Spain win the trophy.
The Barcelona winger made his senior club debut in April 2023 at just 15 years and 291 days old, becoming the youngest player ever to represent the club’s first team. He subsequently became Spain’s youngest senior international and youngest goalscorer.
His breakthrough on the international stage came at Euro 2024. Yamal became the youngest player ever to appear at the tournament and then, aged 16 years and 362 days, the youngest player to score in European Championship history. Spain went on to win the title, with Yamal named the competition’s Young Player of the Tournament.
Two years later, he added the World Cup to his rapidly expanding list of honors, becoming the youngest player to win both the European Championship and the World Cup.
Why did Lamine Yamal’s little brother become an internet sensation?
Keyne is Yamal’s three-year-old maternal half-brother. Born in 2022, he is the son of Yamal’s mother, Sheila Ebana, and her current husband. Despite their 15-year age gap, the brothers have a notably close relationship, with Yamal describing Keyne as one of the greatest sources of happiness in his life.
Keyne became one of the unexpected personalities of Spain’s World Cup campaign as television cameras repeatedly captured his enthusiastic reactions in the stands, with the most famous the one that’s now a tattoo.
He was also seen celebrating on the field following Spain’s victory in the final, further increasing the affection supporters had developed for him during the tournament.
Other unusual promises made during the World Cup
The anonymous supporter was not the only person whose pre-tournament wager came back to haunt him.
Spain forward Ferran Torres had promised to shave his head if the national team won the World Cup. Following the team’s victory, he attended a reception with the Spanish royal family at Zarzuela Palace with his hair still intact.
Princess Leonor remembered the promise. Cameras captured her asking Torres: “Weren’t you going to shave your head?”
Torres laughed and indicated that he no longer intended to do it.
Cucurella’s promise to get inked
Marc Cucurella made a promise that may be considerably harder to escape. The Spain defender said before the final that he would get a tattoo of head coach Luis de la Fuente’s face if the team lifted the trophy.
After Spain defeated Argentina, De la Fuente reminded Cucurella that it was time to keep his word. The defender had said he wanted the tattoo placed somewhere visible and even appealed through social media for suggestions and tattoo artists.
