World Cup 2026 is already producing plenty of memorable stories across the United States, Canada and Mexico, but one of the most unusual has nothing to do with soccer.

Instead, it involves snakes.

The Switzerland national team is among the sides affected, even joking about the situation on social media after discovering that its training base in San Diego is located near an area populated by several species of rattlesnake.

According to local wildlife information, the area is home to four different species of rattlesnake, including the Southern Pacific rattlesnake (Crotalus helleri), a venomous species found throughout Southern California. While bites are rarely fatal with modern medical treatment, the snake is considered potentially dangerous and requires caution.

An unexpected World Cup concern

Switzerland is not the only team dealing with reptilian neighbors during the tournament.

Norway, whose training base is located in Greensboro, North Carolina, has also received an unwelcome surprise in the form of copperhead snakes, one of the most common venomous snakes in the southeastern United States.

The City of Greensboro’s official website notes that copperheads are “very common” in the area, news that did not exactly delight Norway captain Kristian Thorstvedt.

“I’m not happy at all to hear that,” Thorstvedt said when told about the local wildlife.

Neither Switzerland nor Norway expected snakes to become part of their World Cup preparations, but both teams have had to familiarize themselves with the animals living around their training facilities.

World Cup 2026 began on June 11 and will conclude with the final on July 19 in New York. The world’s biggest soccer tournament always generates unusual stories and lasting memories.

Few, however, would have predicted that snakes would emerge as one of the talking points for two European nations before all the teams had even played.
