United States’ World Cup prep to forget and the worst is yet to come

With just over two months until the World Cup begins, the United States men’s national team has left behind more questions than answers. The latest international window exposed deep shortcomings in structure, mentality and defensive stability. The losses to Belgium and Portugal were painful not only because of the scoreline, but because they revealed a team with no response.

The 5-2 loss to Belgium painted the picture of a vulnerable back line, unable to stay organized under sustained pressure. Every Belgian attack carried real danger. The lack of coordination between the lines created spaces the opponent exploited without mercy. Days later, the 0-2 defeat to Portugal confirmed the issue was not a one-off. The United States lacked ideas going forward and showed little edge to truly compete.

The most worrying part is yet to come

The outlook becomes even more troubling when the schedule comes into focus. The Stars and Stripes will not play again until late May. Their next game is set for May 31 against Senegal, followed by another demanding test on June 6 against Germany. Both games will come less than two weeks before their World Cup opener against Paraguay.

The lack of competitive rhythm could become a silent enemy. While other national teams fine-tune the smallest details, the United States has been left with a sea of doubts that will not be addressed until the very month of the World Cup. The margin for error is shrinking fast. Any flaw in those games could carry directly into the sport’s biggest stage.

Mauricio Pochettino will have very little time to correct structural problems. The defense needs order, the midfield needs more control, and the attack needs finishing. With no games in between, every decision carries greater weight. The team is not only competing against its opponents – it is also racing against the clock.

World Cup hope remains intact, but the current context invites concern. The United States is entering the final stretch with more questions than answers. And in soccer, when doubt outweighs certainty, risk often turns into reality.
