Update:

The knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway with the first ever round of 32, and with it comes “new” suspension rules, which are actually identical to those used in the group stage, just applied across multiple rounds.

In the opening phase of the tournament, players who received two yellow cards automatically served a one-game suspension in the match following the one in which they picked up their second booking.

For instance, South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena and Cape Verde’s Sidney Lopes Cabral were both booked in their country’s first two World Cup games, causing them to miss the final group match.

It is widely believed that Declan Rice was rested for England’s final group game against Panama to ensure he didn’t risk picking up a second yellow card of the tournament, which would have caused him to miss the round of 32 meeting with DR Congo.

Yellow cards reset after the group stage

The good news for everyone involved is that all yellow cards were wiped at the end of the group stage, with players starting the round of 32 with a clean slate.

However, between the start of the round of 32 and the end of the quarterfinals, two bookings will once again trigger a one-match suspension.

To clarify, a player who gets a yellow card in both the round of 32 and the round of 16 will miss their team’s quarterfinal. Likewise, a player who receives two yellow cards across the round of 32, round of 16 and quarterfinals will be suspended for the semifinal.

However, all yellow cards are reset again after the conclusion of the quarterfinals, meaning a player booked in both the quarterfinal and semifinal will still be eligible to play in the World Cup final.

Red card suspension rules

The suspension rules for red cards are more straightforward.

Players who are sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the same match must serve a one-game suspension in the following game, regardless of the round. The same applies to straight red cards, with one exception.

If a player commits an especially serious offense, FIFA can review the incident and impose a longer suspension. This has already happened at the 2026 World Cup, with Qatar’s Assim Madibo receiving a five-match ban and South Africa’s Themba Zwane handed a three-game suspension for serious foul play during the group stage.
