Update:

After nearly three decades away from soccer’s biggest stage, Norway are back at the World Cup and making history.

Led by Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard, Norway have surged into the quarterfinals of the 2026 tournament, setting up a blockbuster clash with England. It marks their deepest-ever run at a World Cup, and a significant step beyond anything they’ve achieved before.

Norway’s best-ever World Cup finish

Prior to 2026, Norway had never gone beyond the Round of 16. Their best performances came in:

  • 1938 – Reached the Round of 16 (knockout format)
  • 1998 – Reached the Round of 16 (lost 1-0 to Italy)

In both cases, their tournament ended at the first knockout hurdle. Now, for the first time in history, Norway are among the final eight teams at a World Cup.

A 28-year wait finally ends

Before this tournament, Norway’s last World Cup appearance came in 1998. That squad, featuring names like Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Kjetil Rekdal, produced one of the country’s most iconic moments - a dramatic 2-1 win over Brazil in the group stage.

But after that, Norway disappeared from the global stage. They failed to qualify for every World Cup from 2002 through 2022, making their return in 2026 the end of a 28-year absence, one of the longest droughts for a European nation with their pedigree.

Norway’s overall World Cup record

Across their history, Norway have been relatively infrequent participants at the tournament. They have now appeared in four editions:

  • 1938 (Round of 16)
  • 1994 (Group Stage)
  • 1998 (Round of 16)
  • 2026 (Still in - Currently Quarterfinals)

Coming into this year, their overall record was modest, but the current campaign has significantly boosted their numbers, both in wins and goals scored.

The 2026 breakthrough run

Norway’s run in 2026 has been nothing short of remarkable. After navigating a difficult group, they’ve come alive in the knockout rounds. They defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 in the Round of 32, and then shocked Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16, with Haaland scoring twice.

The victory over Brazil, echoing their famous 1998 result, sent Norway into uncharted territory. Haaland, who fired Norway to the tournament with 16 goals in qualifying, has continued his form on the biggest stage, emerging as one of the standout players of the competition.

This current squad is widely considered Norway’s “golden generation”. With Ødegaard pulling the strings in midfield and attacking talents like Alexander Sørloth and Antonio Nusa providing support, the team has a balance that previous eras lacked.

Under coach Ståle Solbakken, Norway also cruised through qualifying with a perfect record, a sign that their rise has been building for some time.

What comes next?

Now, Norway stand one game away from an even greater milestone - a place in the World Cup semifinals. Standing in their way is England, one of the tournament favorites. But given what Norway have already achieved, including defeating Brazil, they’ve proven they are more than capable of causing another upset.

Regardless of what happens next, this is already the most successful World Cup campaign in Norway’s history.
