Who scored for Egypt against Argentina in the World Cup 2026 Round of 16?
Yasser Ibrahim stunned the defending champions with an early header in Atlanta, giving Egypt a dream start. Zico got the second.

Egypt struck first against Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 as defender Yasser Ibrahim powered home a header to hand the Pharaohs a surprise early lead at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Egypt would then go on to double their lead when Zico scored on the break in the 69th minute.
Egypt’s opening goal against Argentina
Egypt’s breakthrough came in the 15th minute after they forced a corner on the right flank. Mohamed Hany’s persistence won the set piece before the ball was worked short to Ahmed Attia, who delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area. Ibrahim timed his run perfectly, slipping in front of Lisandro Martínez to plant a powerful header into the top right corner beyond Emiliano Martínez, who was left rooted to the spot.
Argentina stunned
Argentina had been looking to settle into its usual rhythm and control possession, but Egypt’s threat from set pieces proved decisive. Ibrahim’s finish was only his second international goal and gave the African side the perfect start.
Although Argentina fans vastly outnumbered Egypt supporters inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, pockets of red erupted in celebration when the ball hit the net. Pharaoh hats flew into the air as Egypt’s fans celebrated a historic moment.

The defending champions entered the match as favorites despite coming through a grueling Round of 32 victory over Cape Verde, needing extra time to secure a dramatic 3-2 win just four days earlier. Lionel Messi, Enzo Fernández, and Alexis Mac Allister all played the full 120 minutes in that match, but head coach Lionel Scaloni reported no injury concerns ahead of the clash with Egypt.
Egypt, meanwhile, arrived full of confidence after making history by winning its first-ever World Cup knockout match, defeating Australia on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Led by Mohamed Salah, the Pharaohs are aiming to extend their remarkable run, and Ibrahim’s early header gives them the ideal platform against one of the tournament favorites.
Messi misses penalty
Just after Egypt’s goal, Argentina were awarded a penalty when Hassan brought down Tagliafico in the box.
Messi stepped up, sent the ball rather tamely to the keeper’s left and Shobeir read it to perfection and saved. That was Messi’s second penalty miss in this World Cup after his penalty against Austria. In total he has now missed four out of eight at World Cups.
