Why is it called New York New Jersey Stadium? World Cup final venue explained
FIFA renamed MetLife Stadium for the World Cup, but is it in New York or New Jersey? Here’s the story behind the unusual name.
If you have been watching the 2026 World Cup, you probably already know by now that all the stadiums were renamed to reflect location rather than brand names, as per FIFA rules. But that doesn’t explain why the final is being played in a stadium with two state names - New York New Jersey Stadium. Indeed it only made things more confusing. Which is it? New York or New Jersey? You can’t be both!
No, but really...are you coming to New York?
The stadium is MetLife - but FIFA won’t call it that
The stadium hosting the World Cup final is MetLife Stadium, home of the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets and located in New Jersey (yes, the confusion continues). However, as you may know, during the World Cup, FIFA does not allow stadiums to use corporate-sponsored names unless they are official tournament partners.
MetLife, the insurance company, is not one of those partners. As a result, the stadium, like all others in the tournament, must be temporarily renamed using a neutral, non-commercial title.
So why “New York New Jersey”?
While other stadiums are a little misleading (Dallas Stadium is in Arlington, for example), this one is just straight up confusing, because New York seemingly has nothing to do with it. The stadium is not only in a different city, but in a completely different state.
MetLife Stadium is not actually located in New York. It sits in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River. Geographically, the World Cup final is being played in New Jersey.
Culturally and globally, though, the venue is tied to New York. FIFA’s solution was to combine both identities. “New York New Jersey Stadium” reflects the general metropolitan area, one of the largest and most recognizable regions in the world, rather than strictly the state line. They decided to compromise to acknowledge this as well as maximize global recognition.
For millions of viewers around the world, “New York” is instantly recognizable. Adding “New Jersey” keeps things geographically accurate, even if it makes the name a bit longer and more awkward than usual. It may not roll off the tongue, but it does exactly what FIFA wants. It avoids sponsor conflicts and tells a global audience...roughly...where the game is being played.
