World Cup 2026

Wild 2026 World Cup stats: Mbappé’s top speed would earn him a speeding ticket

FIFA’s latest figures reveal a tournament full of remarkable milestones, eye-popping records and surprising facts beyond the action on the field.

With the quarterfinals about to get underway, the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to produce numbers unlike anything seen in previous editions of the tournament.

Attendance has reached an astonishing 99.7% of stadium capacity, with more than 6.25 million fans filling venues across North America. FIFA also reports massive digital engagement, including 20 billion video views across its platforms.

Mbappé, Tielemans and Gueye lead individual statistics

Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans has covered the greatest distance of any player at this World Cup, logging 38.4 miles (61.8 kilometers).

France star Kylian Mbappé recorded the tournament’s fastest sprint at 23.4 mph (37.6 km/h). FIFA even pointed out that his top speed exceeds the legal speed limit in some areas.

Meanwhile, Senegal’s Pape Gueye unleashed the fastest shot on target of the competition at 82 mph (131.9 km/h).

Eight remaining teams and historic milestones

Here are some of the most remarkable numbers from the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far:

  • Four of the eight quarterfinalists are former world champions: Argentina, England, France and Spain.
  • Morocco has become the first African nation to reach the World Cup quarterfinals twice after previously doing so in 2022.
  • Norway has reached the quarterfinals for the first time in its history.
  • Switzerland has advanced to the last eight for the first time since the 1954 World Cup.

Goals continue to pile up

A total of 280 goals were scored across the tournament’s first 96 matches, an average of 2.92 goals per game.

Argentina leads all teams with 14 goals.

The Round of 16 produced 23 goals in eight matches, averaging 2.88 per game.

Lionel Messi now tops the all-time FIFA World Cup scoring chart with 21 goals, followed by Mbappé with 19.

Enzo Fernández’s winning goal against Egypt also entered the history books as the 3,000th goal ever scored at a FIFA World Cup.

Cards, scoring races and new records

Referees have issued 259 yellow cards, an average of 2.70 per match, along with 14 red cards, averaging 0.15 per game.

Messi leads the Golden Boot race with eight goals, while Mbappé and Norway’s Erling Haaland have seven each.

It is the first time in World Cup history that three players have scored at least seven goals in the same tournament.

Mbappé has also extended his own World Cup knockout-stage scoring record to 11 goals, more than any player in tournament history.

Passing, distance covered and squad usage

Tielemans remains the tournament leader in total distance covered at 38.4 miles, while fellow Belgian Timothy Castagne recorded the greatest distance in a single match at 10.1 miles (16.29 kilometers).

Mbappé still owns the tournament’s fastest sprint at 23.4 mph.

Argentina leads all teams in passing with 3,446 attempted passes, including 3,146 completed.

Teams have completed 3,282 crosses, with Canada leading the tournament with 158 successful deliveries.

More than 6.25 million fans have attended matches

A total of 1,248 players from 48 nations have been part of the tournament, with 1,029 appearing in at least one match.

There have been 916 substitute appearances, averaging 4.77 substitutions per game.

By the end of the Round of 16, total attendance had reached 6,259,584, representing an extraordinary 99.7% stadium occupancy and an average crowd of 65,204 fans per match.

The tournament’s largest crowds have come at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, where five World Cup matches have each attracted 80,824 spectators, for a combined attendance of 404,120 fans.
