World Cup setback: Norway battling sickness ahead of biggest game in history
Norway’s World Cup buildup is disrupted by illness affecting multiple players and staff ahead of a historic quarterfinal vs England.

Norway has had a fairytale run at the 2026 World Cup so far, but it’s recently taken an unexpected turn. Just days before their quarterfinal showdown with England, illness has spread through the Norwegian camp, raising concerns about player fitness, preparation, and whether one of the tournament’s biggest surprises can maintain its momentum.
Growing concern inside the Norway camp
Manager Ståle Solbakken confirmed that several players and staff have been dealing with flu-like symptoms, including coughing, fever, and fatigue.

It’s not an isolated case or a minor issue. It has lingered and spread within the group at a critical moment in the tournament. Solbakken himself admitted he has been affected, showing how widespread the issue has become.
Who has been affected?
Among the most notable cases is striker Jørgen Strand Larsen, who suffered from a fever that disrupted his buildup earlier in the tournament.
Defender Marcus Holmgren Pedersen was forced to miss Norway’s dramatic Round of 16 win due to illness. Although he has since returned to training, he is still working his way back to full fitness, a concern against an England side known for its pace and attacking depth.
There are also injury concerns compounding the issue. Left-back David Møller Wolfe was forced off late in the win over Brazil, leaving uncertainty around his availability.
Major quarterfinals setback
Individually, these setbacks might be manageable. Combined, however, they present a real selection and performance headache. At the quarterfinal stage of a World Cup, physical sharpness, recovery, and tactical execution all need to be near perfect.
Illness disrupts all three. Energy levels drop, affecting stamina and decision-making. Recovery slows, especially during congested match schedules. Training intensity dips, limiting preparation for specific opponents.
Solbakken pointed to travel demands and the physical toll of the tournament as contributing factors, a common issue in modern international competitions, especially one spread across multiple host cities.
Haaland remains the key figure
Despite the uncertainty, Norway’s hopes still revolve around one player: Erling Haaland.
The captain delivered a historic performance in the Round of 16, scoring both goals in a stunning 2–1 victory over Brazil, a result that sent Norway into their first-ever World Cup quarterfinal.
As long as Haaland is fit, Norway will believe they have a chance. But soccer is rarely a one-man game at this level. Depth, cohesion, and collective energy will all be tested, especially against an England side with fewer reported disruptions.
A historic opportunity under threat
Regardless of what happens next, Norway has already made history in this tournament. But the timing of this illness outbreak couldn’t be worse. A quarterfinal against England represents the biggest match in the nation’s soccer history, and one that demands peak physical condition.
Instead, Norway enters it with uncertainty. The question now isn’t just about tactics or talent. It’s about recovery, and whether the squad can overcome a challenge that no game plan can fully control.
