Update:

Thursday’s final round of Group D games saw Australia follow the United States into the World Cup knockout stages, with Paraguay all but certain to join the pair in the last 32.

Türkiye, the group’s bottom team, went into matchday three knowing they were already out; however, Vincenzo Montella’s men at least regained a measure of pride with a dramatic win over the Americans.

What happened on Group D matchday three?

Having clinched top spot with a game to spare last week, the USMNT had the chance to seal a perfect group stage record - a feat they had not achieved at a men’s World Cup since 1930. But Türkiye denied them a third win in three: the co-hosts were beaten by a last-gasp goal from Kaan Ayhan, as the Crescent-Stars snatched a 3-2 triumph in the eighth minute of stoppage time in Los Angeles.

Earlier in the clash at SoFi Stadium, Austin Trusty and Sebastian Berhalter had scored for the USMNT, either side of Türkiye strikes by Arda Güler and Baris Yilmaz.

In Santa Clara, meanwhile, Australia and Paraguay both benefited from a goalless draw. A point for the Socceroos ensured they took second spot in Group D, earning Tony Popovic’s men automatic qualification for the knockout rounds. The stalemate meant Paraguay finished just outside the top two - but the South Americans’ final tally of four points will almost certainly take them through as one of the eight best third-placed finishers.

Indeed, the soccer stats specialists Opta give Paraguay a 99.85% chance of reaching the last 32.

Who will the USMNT and Australia play in the round of 32?

The USMNT will now travel to Santa Clara, where Mauricio Pochettino’s men are to take on Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, July 1. The Australians will play the runner-up in Group G, on Friday, July 3. As it stands, their opponents in Arlington, Texas, would be Iran.

While Paraguay’s progression to the knockout stages is yet to be confirmed, Gustavo Alfaro’s side is in line for a last-32 matchup with four-time champions Germany. That clash would take place in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Monday, June 29.
