World Cup 2026 sets all-time attendance record
The World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada will beat the attendance record that had stood since 1994 on Thursday. It will do so after just 60 matches, four fewer than a traditional World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup is on the verge of making history. With Thursday’s slate of games, the tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada will surpass the all-time attendance record for a FIFA World Cup.
The previous record was set at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, which drew 3,587,538 fans across 52 matches, a figure that had seemed untouchable for more than 30 years. But the 2026 tournament will eclipse it after just 60 games. And it will do so despite widespread criticism over high ticket prices, which have been one of the major talking points of the tournament.
Even more remarkably, the tournament will still be far from over.
A tournament fueled by packed stadiums
The attendance boom has not happened by chance. A combination of modern venues, massive soccer markets and unprecedented demand has turned every matchday into a celebration.
Since the tournament kicked off, stadiums across the United States, Mexico and Canada have welcomed huge crowds, driven by fans traveling from every corner of the world.
The presence of traditional soccer powers, the ease of traveling between host cities and North America’s appeal as a tourist destination have all contributed to an extraordinary response from supporters.
The result is clear: a World Cup attendance record that has fallen well before the tournament reaches its halfway point.

And there are still 44 matches to play
Breaking the record is historic in itself, but what comes next could be even more extraordinary.
Unlike every World Cup from 1998 through 2022, which featured 64 matches, the 2026 edition has expanded to 48 teams and 104 games, the largest tournament in World Cup history.
That means that after surpassing the 1994 record, another 44 matches will still remain, giving the tournament every opportunity to push the final attendance figure to unprecedented levels.

The biggest World Cup ever staged
FIFA’s decision to expand the competition has been met with an immediate response from fans. What began as a sporting revolution is already becoming a global phenomenon.
With thousands of supporters filling stadiums every day and dozens of matches still to come, the 2026 World Cup is not only on course to crown a champion. It is also setting a new benchmark for the global game.
History has already been rewritten. And the World Cup attendance record has a new owner.
