Simeone: "Lack of goals? I’m the king of patience"
Atlético’s coach focused on a job well done in Eindhoven: "I’m left with the feeling that the team’s almost there. Only the goal escaped us".
Atlético coach Diego Simeone spoke after watching his side play out a goalless draw against PSV.
What are your impressions on the game and that Atlético couldn’t find the net?
I’m happy with the work the lads did tonight; we started pressing PSV and creating chances on goal and our possession in the centre of the pitch was good... It was the same after the break when PSV went a man down. We had a clear chance from Torres and one from Correa, from which he could have done better. I’m left with the feeling that if we play like we did tonight, we will be closer to winning the tie. As for patience, I’m the No.1. I was delighted to see my team pressing and concentrating play in our rivals’ half away from home. I know the goals will come. If that requires patience then I’m the number one in that regard.
So you don’t think Atleti have left the tie wide open?
That’s the beauty of this sport - a draw will give PSV fans hope of making the next round. We’ll see how our people respond in the return. I thought we looked like we wanted to win this game. We had chances to do so – Vietto’s effort was cleared off the line, Griezmann was close and later Torres in the second half... We’ll see how much we are made to suffer in the return leg because PSV are a good side and they will also have the benefit of being able to score an away goal. But then we’ve got the Calderón.
