The two men, Nigerian nationals both, had been celebrating the victim’s 34th birthday in a rented flat in Nalasopara (the eastern part of the city) since Saturday and a fight broke out about between the two in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to police reports, Kiran Kabadi, who was arguing the case for the Real Madrid player, became enraged with his companion, Nwabu, and threw a glass past the 24-year-old that smashed against the wall behind.

Overcome with anger, the Messi supporter picked up a shard of glass and slit his friend’s throat, said police inspector, Kiran Kabadi of Tulinj station.

Cricket is by far and away the most popular sport in India, although football has been making up ground in recent years and there are huge numbers of supporters of European clubs in the country now.
