Keeper David de Gea was in fine form as La Roja survived a first half to forget to grab a draw, with Aritz Aduriz hitting his side's leveller.

De Gea, Aduriz stake claim as Spain labour to Italy draw

Goalkeeper David de Gea pulled off a string of saves on Thursday night as Aritz Aduriz's second-half equaliser ensured that an unconvincing Spain came away from their trip to Italy with a 1-1 draw.

Named in the starting line-up ahead of Iker Casillas in Udine, Manchester United custodian De Gea had to be alive to deny a fizzing Antonio Candreva drive during a poor first-half performance from La Roja - one in which they failed to register a single shot for the first time since late 2013.

After the break, De Gea also kept out chances for Lorenzo Insigne and Alessandro Florenzi before Leonardo Bonucci sent a clear header flashing wide, but midway through the second 45 he was powerless to prevent Insigne from giving the hosts the lead as the Napoli man finished from Emanuele Giaccherini's low cross.

Insigne might have put the Azzurri back in front late on, but De Gea was again there to tip over his chipped effort as it finished all square at the Stadio Friuli.

Spain now travel to Cluj to face Romania on Sunday in the second Euro 2016 warm-up that they have scheduled for the March international break.

Here's how it all unfolded:
