Cádiz CF and Sevilla Atlético denounce homophobia

The group IV Segunda B teams stood together to denounce the abusive taunts a local referee was subjected to during an underage game. "Red card for homophobia".

Red card for homophobia

Before Sunday’s league encounter between Cádiz CF and Sevilla Atlético got underway at the Ramón de Carranza de Cádiz Stadium, the teams came together in a show solidarity for local referee Jesús Tomillero, who was subjected to homophobic abuse while officiating an underage game on 26 March.

Before the meeting between the two group IV Segunda B sides (the third tier of Spanish club football), the two sets of players joined together on the pitch and held aloft a banner reading ‘Red card for homophobia’.

Tomillero, who alerted the authorities to the insults he was forced to endure the previous week, was invited to attend the game by the Andalusian club. The pre-match event was organised by the ‘Nenas Cadistas’ supporters’ group in conjunction with Cádiz CF in an effort to address the homophobic problem that exists within football and promote inclusivity in sport.
