Atlético waiting for news on Godín's injury

The Uruguayan centre half was subbed off against Club Athletic after tweaking his hamstring. Tests are due to be carried out on Friday once the swelling has gone down.

The biggest news for Atlético Madrid fans at San Mamés last night wasn’t the hugely important away win over Valverde’s Bilbao Lions -- a victory that keeps los colchoneros hot on Barcelona’s heels -- but rather the fact that Diego Godín asked to be taken off in the tenth minute after tweaking his biceps femoris muscle. Whether it’s a niggle, a tear or a sprain remains to be seen.

The plan is to carry out a full medical exam tomorrow. Before the source of the pain can be accurately located, the swelling in his leg must go down first. Only once before had the Uruguayan looked to the bench to come off this season, when los rojiblancos played PSV at home in the Champions League round of 16. On that occasion he suffered a grade II tear in his biceps femoral muscle, a setback that kept him sidelined for 19 days and caused him to miss two games: Sporting and Betis.

Godín has been lauded this season as one of the key components of an Atlético backline that boasts one of the most enviable defensive records in world football. With Simeone’s men now fighting battles on two fronts, as they prepare for their Champions League semi-final meeting with Bayern Munich while also trying to overtake Barça at the summit of LaLiga, the loss of the 30-year-old is a terrifying prospect for Atleti.
